Any help would be greatly appreciated but please do not re-post any solutions already listed here. I am an advanced computer user but with average knowledge of macs.

Is there any command I can try to set the boot device to CD-ROM drive so I can install OS 9 or X on it? I have looked all over this forum, tried just about everything that I saw. When I press the option button when it boots all it will catch is the hard drive, which does not have a working OS on it.

However, when I try to netboot either with HTTP or NFS, the machine kernel panics because it cant download the file. I successfully created a netboot image from leopard 10.5.1.

I do not have an external CD or DVD drive nor do I have the money and all of my other computers are PCs running various versions of Windows(not sure if a G3 will netboot from a Windows platform). I'm trying to put any Mac operating system on this machine and it refuses to boot from the CD-ROM drive. I have a mac OS 9.2 installation disc and an OS X 10.1 installation disc (Both are CD's, not DVD's). If you're using Boot Camp to start up from Microsoft Windows, set Startup Disk preferences to start up from macOS instead. We moved the resulting imac.nbi file to the /Library/Netboot folder on the server where netboot images reside.

Press and hold all of the keys in the given combination together, not one at a time. On the iMac, we used a feature of Carbon Copy Cloner to create a netboot image of the iMac onto an external firewire drive.

If a key combination doesn't work during startup, one of these solutions may help:

Eject (⏏) or F12 or mouse button or trackpad button: eject removable media, such as an optical disc. Disabled when using a firmware password.

Command-V: start up in verbose mode. Disabled when using a firmware password.

T: start up in target disk mode. Disabled when using a firmware password.

Disabled in macOS Mojave or later, or when using a firmware password.

Command-S: start up in single-user mode.

To use the default boot image on the server, press and hold Option-N instead. Disabled when using a firmware password.

N: start up from a NetBoot server, if your Mac supports network startup volumes.

Or use Option-D to start up to this utility over the internet. Disabled when using a firmware password.

D: start up with the Apple Diagnostics utility.

If your Mac is using a firmware password, it ignores this key combination or starts up from macOS Recovery.

Option-Command-P-R: reset NVRAM or PRAM.

If your Mac is using a firmware password, you'll be prompted to enter the password.

Option (⌥) or Alt: start up to Startup Manager, which will allow you to choose other available startup disks or volumes.

macOS Recovery installs different versions of macOS, depending on the key combination you use. If your Mac is using a firmware password, you'll be prompted to enter the password. Or use Option-Command-R or Shift-Option-Command-R to start up from macOS Recovery over the internet.

Command (⌘)-R: start up from the built-in macOS Recovery system.

Keep holding until the described behaviour occurs.

To use any of these key combinations, press and hold the keys immediately after pressing the power button to turn on your Mac, or after your Mac begins to restart.
